Water Conservation & Water Pollution Prevention
CisternOur cistern system, located in the main garden, has been in use for 3 years. It consists of 7 – 55 gallon, re-purposed plastic barrels and a solar powered pump. The barrels catch and store runoff from a parking area and the roofs of the elementary and preschool buildings, keeping that runoff from entering the storm drains. The water from the system is used to water the main garden and the plants in the greenhouse. As a benefit of having the cistern system, well water was used only once in the garden during 2011.

Rain BarrelsStudents constructed, painted, and installed 2 rain barrels to collect and store the water from our roofs for use to water the various gardens around the school. These rain barrels reduce the amount of runoff that enters the storm drains on the property.
Rain GardensOur native plant rain garden is a partnership between Ciminelli Landscaping and the St. Andrew's students. It is located between the driveway and a downspout, making it the perfect location to capture runoff, thus diverting it from the storm drains.
