Mobile Science LabSt. Andrew’s students have benefited from the experiences of MAEF, Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation, Inc., supported Mobile Science Labs. Students as young as kindergarten age visit a real science lab to learn about subjects as varied as agriculture, aquatics, and food.
The Ag Products Lab provided our third through eighth grade students experience with fabrics made from food, the science of milk, corn, eggs and soy beans, while the younger students learned about plants and seeds, food, popcorn, and they were able to make butter. The Aquatics Lab included lessons about water filtration and well contamination, aqua ecosystems, wetlands, salinity and water quality. Students of every age enjoyed being scientists in our mobile labs. Our Food, Fiber, and You Lab gave students experience with food DNA, opportunities to make cheese, explored fabrics made from food, and experienced the science of soybean and petroleum based crayons. |

Ciminelli's Landscaping Services, Inc.Mr. Ciminelli, owner of Ciminelli's Landscaping, joined forces with St. Andrew’s Day School to consult with the school on how to best prepare our grounds for habitat improvement and to prevent runoff that drains into our bay. We found his knowledge and background consistent with our Green initiatives, so he joined us for our 2009 Earth Day event.
In 2009, Mr. Ciminelli provided workshops for our students, their teachers, and parents, which detailed how to create and maintain green roofs. He worked well with adults and children which led to the start of a long partnership. The following year, St. Andrew’s Earth Day Committee contacted Mr. Ciminelli about rejoining us in a project from which our students could both participate and learn. Thus, in 2010, St. Andrew’s students worked with Mr. Ciminelli to create a rain garden. Under the direction of Mr. Ciminelli, students dug out the researched area, replaced soil, and planted appropriate plants. During the entire project, students worked and learned about the importance of rain gardens, how to select the site, amend the soil, and how to select appropriate plants. Additionally, Mr. Ciminelli stressed that divisions of plantings could be made in years to come so that another rain garden could be made. We so appreciated our partnership with Mr. Ciminelli that we contacted him the next year! On Earth Day 2011, we worked together to create a vertical garden along a hot, brick wall at one end of our building. Mr. Ciminelli not only donated equipment, but once again he provided our students and teachers with the knowledge and understanding of the uses and maintenance of vertical gardens as well as how to create them. Our students worked hard on it and it thrives today. Our rain garden and vertical garden stand as a reminder of the power of partnerships. We salute Mr. Ciminelli and Ciminelli’s Landscaping for their ongoing and valuable contributions to St. Andrew’s Day School. |
Anne Arundel County RecyclingAnne Arundel County Recycling Division, under the Department of Public Works, has partnered with St. Andrew’s to provide education and best practices information during our annual Earth Day events. Their educational outreach program has benefited our school by giving meaning to our recycling here at St. Andrew’s. During their presentations they discuss the definition, importance, and benefits of recycling while teaching children about the landfill and recycling processor. They brought examples of recyclable materials, spoke about composting, and generally encouraged our students to continue recycling at school and at home.
Our thriving recycling program stems in large part from the continuing support from our county’s Department of Public Works. Our partner since 2008, we count Anne Arundel County Recycling Division to be our partner for years to come. |
BGEIn 2010, BGE began a partnership with St. Andrew’s during our Earth Day event in order to show our students they support our green initiative. Not only have they provided information and education for our students, but they provided the opportunity for the students to see their impressive lift truck in action.
Our planned Earth Day 2012 will include BGE again, so they can educate all of us on their progress as an energy provider. They have discussed their monitoring system for energy usage to facilitate reduction of energy use and an increase in energy efficiency. |
