Art Mural From Recycled BottlecapsThe entire student body of St. Andrew's showed interested in collecting plastic bottlecaps to be used for our art murals. Buckets of colorful caps were collected throughout the year. 3rd and 4th grade students cooperated in designing the sea creatures and painting them on the plywood boards. The students shared in the selection of colors to enhance this beautiful mural. Gluing has begun and the murals will be finisher for our Earth Day Extravaganza.

Sam Gribley DayEach year, after reading My Side of the Mountain, by Jean Craighead George, the 4th graders celebrate Sam Gribley Day. Sam, the book's main character, lived off the land in upstate New York for a year. During that time he learned a great deal about animals, plants, and the changing seasons. To celebrate Sam's accomplishments, the 4th graders invite volunteers from the community to come in and share their skills and expertise. The students make fish print T-shirts, learn about birds of prey, make strawberry jam, and gut fish!

Green MagicJoe Romano presented his “Green Magic!” show to the St. Andrew's school community. This production is designed to magically transport students to a world where “going green” can be exciting and fun! Mr. Romano blends science, comedy, and magic to motivate students to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Students witnessed a used soda can, recycled in the blink of an eye and watched as an animatronic bird came to life to educate about the dangers that plastic bags pose on our planet.

Celebrating Spring - Forcing BulbsThe Spring bulb forcing project brings the Preeschool and Elementary divisions of St. Andrew's together in a wonderful way. The 3 and 4 year old preschool classes work together with the 3rd and 4th graders to learn the difference between seeds and bulbs. The students examine the various types of bulbs, choosing one to plant in their repurposed plastic container. The bulbs are placed in the children's classrooms, where they are carefully tended by the students until they bloom in mid-February.
