Summary of Activities
The Green School curriculum at St. Andrew’s is based on the “No Child Left Inside” philosophy. Our classes, facilities and grounds have been carefully prepared and tended to support the continued growth of our dedication to the environment, and we are achieving impressive results.
Inspired by Richard Louv’s book, Last Child in the Woods, our classes have been adapted to incorporate outdoor learning as frequently as possible. Continuing participation in the MAEOE conference and workshops enable us to incorporate new methods and ideas quickly into our curriculum.
Our program, which began with the germ of an idea among faculty, has grown into a vibrant community of faculty, students, parents and support staff, all dedicated to caring for and protecting our environment.
Our commitment to the “No Child Left Inside,” philosophy enables us to intertwine our natural world with art, science, math, music, and language arts. The school’s outdoor classrooms, centered in the vegetable gardens, greenhouse, barnyard, and Aqua Ecosystem facility, provide all our students with hands-on opportunities to put into practice what they are learning in the classroom, and furthermore we believe that what they take into their hands, they take into their hearts.
From caring for earthworms, to hatching and raising chickens, from propagating grapevine cuttings to harvesting grapes, our students learn how their actions can have a positive impact on the natural world surrounding us. Learning opportunities abound as a result, and we count raising and replanting Bay grasses, Maryland Terrapins, rockfish and perch as important as learning the proper way to write a haiku.
Aside from living out our commitment to the environment by daily recycling of any and every material possible, we are proud to say that we have dramatically reduced our waste stream in accordance with Anne Arundel County’s 50/50 Challenge. In addition, we host an Earth Day Exposition here at the school, which strengthens our ties to the community at large and provides even more learning opportunities for our students.
To conclude, the seeds of change planted six years ago have literally transformed our community into a Green School that we are all proud of and have truly impacted the lives of the St. Andrew’s Day School faculty, students and staff.
